Camp Improvements 2008

Check back here often to get the latest about these improvements as more information becomes available.

New COPE Course at Keowa!

Camp Keowa is now boasting a brand new C.O.P.E. Course with both high and low elements. C.O.P.E. stands for Challenging Outdoor Personal Experience and is a program that helps scouts achieve the following goals; Teamwork, Communication, Problem Solving, Decision Making, Self Esteem, Trust, and Leadership. We are installing a total of 13 Low COPE elements and 14 High COPE elements, including a 350-foot “Slide-For-Life” Zipline!
This gives us the fantastic opportunity to offer your troop a private program session to take advantage of our elements. Low-COPE (1.5 hours) is perfect for strengthening your patrols, and high COPE (3 hours) will keep your older scouts coming back year after year.
Additionally, we will run a Progressive COPE program for scouts 13 years and older, where they will join other scouts their age in a daily, week-long challenging COPE experience! Scouts who are 13 may enjoy Progressive COPE Mon-Fri at 3:30.
Scoutmasters may schedule their troop for a High or Low COPE slot with the Program Director upon arrival on Sunday. Scouts must be 13 years old to participate in high-course elements, and Scout Age for low-course elements. Long pants must be worn.

First Aid Merit Badge

This summer, Camp Keowa will see the addition of the First Aid, Eagle required merit badge, to our program! Your scouts will participate in an intensive two-hour a day class, culminating in a realistic disaster experience to test their skills! To ensure scouts receive a quality program, our instructor is licensed as a Nationally Camp School Certified Director, with additional training in ‘Responding to Emergencies’ and ‘Wilderness First Aid’ from Red Cross. First Aid MB will be offered in the Scout Skills area from 3:00 to 5:00. Pre-Requisite: As per First Aid requirement #1, scouts must have attained the rank of First Class to be eligible for this badge.

Four New Merit Badges at Handicrafts

This summer you will see significant additions to the Handicraft program. Formerly, the area was the home to the Arts and Crafts merit badges such as Art, Basketry, Leatherwork, and Wood Carving. The program has evolved and will make a strong move toward emphasizing all of “the arts”.
The new program will be home to four new merit badges including Photography, Public Speaking, Painting, and Theater. These will be offered in addition to the traditional badges listed above.
Scouts taking part in Photography merit badge will be required to bring a digital camera and the USB cord connector to camp
As such, we suggest Scoutmasters ensure their scouts will be dependable enough handle this additional responsibility. We are excited to offer these new opportunities as part of our goal to continually improve our camp and deliver quality program to your scouts.
