The Dan Beard Society
________________________________________________

An Advancement Program for New Campers

Purpose: To welcome new campers to their second home, Camp Keowa, and familiarize them with the property. We will create a bond among the group and foster friendships through various methods, including inducting the campers into the DAN BEARD SOCIETY among completion of the program on Thursday evening. They will participate in a special BQQ at the Village and receive special token.

The aim of the DBS is to provide strong instruction and training for rank advancement through first class. The staff always appreciates extra help from Scoutmasters, especially if you are sending boys through our program. It is strongly recommended to send scouts through the whole program (it will not hurt if some is review for them). However, if you choose too, you may send the boy only to the session block during which time the requirements he needs are being taught. No requirements will be signed off; the boys will be taught the skills on the following chart, and it is the Scoutmaster’s discretion to further test the scout or sign him off.

The Dan Beard Society area is a model campsite, located up the hill from the office at former campsite 8.

Sons of Daniel Boone

An Adventure Program for New Campers
The Sons of Daniel Boone was Dan Beard’s own outdoor-based adventure group before he merged it with the Boy Scouts of America. From 4:00 to 5:00, any young scout is invited to participate in another optional part of the Dan Beard Society program. The Sons of Daniel Boone will help orient new campers to many activities and fun places around camp. Led by Dan Beard’s spirit of adventure and love of the outdoors, the scouts are sure to have a good time participating in our activities. They will participate in activities such as a first year camper only session on our water trampoline, field games, hike to eagle rock, and more.

The Thunderbirds

The Experienced Camper Program

Purpose: This program is geared towards giving more experienced campers, who may already have many of the merit badges offered at camp, an opportunity to meet with other Scouts their own age, and still participate in camp program. We will accomplish this by participating in high adventure activities as to keep them interested in Scouting, Keowa, and the camping program.

Directed toward: The Thunderbirds is a group meant for older Scouts. Scouts participating in the program should be 14 years old to so they can participate in all the high adventure activities. This program would create an incentive for Scouts to come back, even if they have finished most merit badges offered at camp.

Program Outline: Each set of scouts each week will have a different set of interests, so instead of planning a schedule in cement each week, we will have a large list of activities and let the boys choose what they want to do.

Activities: Mountain Biking – C.O.P.E. – Village – Late Night Cracker Barrel – Mud Pond Kayak Trek– Climbing Tower – 19’ Sloop Sailboat Ride– Action Archery – Indian Cliffs, and more…
